  1. Before ordering this rack and pinion or gearbox, get a total turn count from the far right to the far left stop. To get this, turn the steering wheel to the right until it stops, then count the rotations required to reach the left stop. This will determine whether you have a performance vs. standard rack and pinion.

  2. Before ordering, to determine the type of original equipment rack and pinion you have, we need the shape of the lower pinion bearing cap. You can see the cap by standing directly underneath the driver's side of the rack housing and looking straight up at the "cap" that is on the underside of the valve tower, pointing straight down. If the shape of the cap is hexagonal, like a bolt head, or round and flat with 4 notches, it's our part number 2428T. If the cap is convex (bubbled out), it is our part number 2428S.

  3. Before ordering, we need you to verify which of 2 possible original equipment racks you have. You need to try to attach a magnet to the housing exactly half-way between the 2 mounting grommets. We need to know if the magnet sticks, or not, to send you the correct unit.

  4. Before ordering, count the total turns from left lock to right lock. Also, verify if the rack and pinion is mounted with 2 U-shaped brackets (one on the driver's side and one on the passenger side), or only one U-shaped bracket on the passenger side and bolts going through the housing on the driver's side.

  5. Before ordering, check for a variable assist option by looking for a 4-wire pigtail coming from a small cylinder at the top of the valve tower. With a 4-wire pigtail is our 2467, without is our 2453D.

  6. Before ordering, check for a variable assist option by looking for a cylinder with 2 wires coming out of it, screwed into the valve tower. This cylinder will point toward the right headlight. With the cylinder is our "V" (variable) version of this rack.

  7. Before ordering, check for a sensor screwed into the valve tower, near the pressure and return lines. If you have the sensor, it will point generally toward the driver's feet.

  8. Before ordering, verify if your rack and pinion is a TRW or SSG type. Look for a 2" long metal tag riveted to the underside of the rack, on the driver's side of the boot. With the tag means it's a TRW unit, without the tag is an SSG unit.

  9. Before ordering, check for the two letters stamped into the lower pinion bearing cap. The cap can be seen if the car is on the hoist and you are standing under the driver's side of the rack. The cap will point straight down toward you.
    CA, WU or WL = 24137/S
    WT = 24137/Q
    FH        = 24169/Q
    Ns        = 24169/S

  10. Before ordering, check for the variable assist option on your vehicle option label. An "N40" = 2444/q/s, with an "NV7", call us for more information.

  11. Before ordering, check for a variable assist option by looking for a cylinder screwed into the valve tower near the pressure and return line fittings.

  12. Before ordering, check for a sensor screwed into the valve tower, pointing toward the front of the driver's side tire, located about 1 inch below the bottom of the steering column hood.

  13. All except the GT, Coupe, liftback, GTS, Turbo All Trac & Turbo 4WD.

  14. Includes GT Coupe, liftbacks, GTS, Turbo All Track & Turbo 4WD.

  15. Before ordering, count the splines on the input shaft. 36 splines = our 54518, 22 splines = our 54533.

  16. Before ordering, verify if you rack has both a sensor screwed into the valve tower (pointing toward the driver's feet) and a solenoid (pointing toward the left headlight). If you have both the sensor and the solenoid, it's our rack 24333/V, if you have only the sensor, get total turns on the steering wheel from lock to lock; depending on the turn count, it is either our 24333/S or 24333/Q.

  17. Before ordering, look for a square solenoid bolted into the valve tower, pointing up through the front of the hood.

  18. The TRW design will have a lower pinion bearing cap that is round, and flat with four notches in it, screwed into the underside of the valve tower - this will point almost straight down toward the ground. The Mando design will have a hex-shaped lower pinion bearing cap, screwed into the underside of the valve tower.

  19. Before ordering, count the splines on the input shaft. A 22 spline count is our 54288, a 36 spline count is our 54235.

  20. A two-pronged input shaft on the rack is our 55209, a splined input shaft with 4.0 turns from lock to lock is our 55204 4.0, and a splined input shaft with 4.8 turns is our 55204 4.8

  21. Check the housing cover to see if it is ring retained or has a 4-bolt cover.

  22. Verify whether your vehicle's gearbox has a 3-bolt housing cover and a ¾" input shaft (our gearbox number 6507) or a 4-bolt housing cover and a 13/16" input shaft (our gearbox number 6537).

  23. Verify whether your vehicle's gearbox has 25 splines on the input shaft (our gearbox number 6530) or 31 splines on the input shaft (our gearbox number 6532).

  24. Verify whether your vehicle lists "ZQ8" on the options label. With "ZQ8" = our gearbox number 7551, without is our gearbox number 7539.

  25. On the panel van only, verify if your gearbox has a single, short groove on the input shaft, or a groove cut completely around the input shaft; call for stock.

  26. Verify the diameter of the sector shaft (sometimes know as the cross shaft); 1 3/16" is our gear number 5906, 1 ¼" is our gear number 5907.

  27. Verify if your vehicle's gearbox input shaft has 25 splines (our gear number 7512) or 31 splines (our gearbox number 7528).

  28. Verify if your gearbox is a Ford or Saginaw built unit. Ford will have a 2-bolt sector shaft adjustment cover; Saginaw units will have a 4-bolt sector shaft adjustment cover.

  29. Verify if your gearbox has a ¾" diameter input shaft (our gear number 7527) or a 13/16 diameter input shaft (our gear number 7506).

  30. Get the production date for your vehicle and call for more information.

  31. Check your vehicle's engine size and VIN. If it is NOT 5.0 liter and the 8th digit of the vin is NOT 9, our gear number is 6530. If it IS a 5.0 liter and the 8th digit is a 9, our gear number is 6561.

  32. Check the vehicle's option label for the option package "FE2", which is our gearbox number 6561. Without the "FE2" option, order our gearbox number 6530.

  33. Check the vehicle's GVWR and it's series. If it is a 1500 series, or a 2500 series with a GVWR of 7500 or under, it is our gear number 7533. If the GVWR is over 7500, or it is a 3500 series, it is our gear number 7547.
